explaining therapy to children + teens

what is therapy?

Sometimes we have really big feelings that are hard to understand. But that's okay! Therapy is a special place where we can talk about our feelings and learn how to feel better. We can also learn how to tell others how we feel, even when it's hard. And guess what? We can even learn what to do when we feel angry, scared, or even super happy! Your therapist is the person you talk to when you come in for sessions.

what do we do?

During therapy sessions, we have lots of fun things to do! We color, play games, listen to music, make crafts, talk, and dance. When you come into the office, we'll play together for a little while, and then we'll pick something to talk about.

do you tell my grownups what I say?

This is a question everyone asks! Therapy is mostly confidential except for three things:

  1. if someone is hurting you

  2. if you want to hurt yourself

  3. if you want to hurt someone

We speak up when we need to keep you safe. If your therapist thinks it's important to talk to your parents or guardians about something, we will tell you first. You will always be informed; nothing will happen without you being included. We also will talk about why it’s important, to be honest with your parents about how you feel. And no worries, we talk.

when do we finish?

We start with twelve sessions where we get to talk and have fun together! After that, we'll check to see if you feel better or have reached your goal. If you need more time, we continue checking in every few months to see how you feel.
